Photo Tips - Light

Controlling Amount of Light Needed for Great Picture

There is no more important issue in taking good photography then controlling light. This is not overly complicated but is essential to learn.

Controlling light to get the effect you want is a combination of f-stop, shutter speed and ISO.

Higher f-stops give greater Depth of Field. This simply means that you want everything to be in focus, near and far. This higher the f-stop the smaller the lens opening.

Lower f-stops limit DOF (Depth of Field) This is great for close ups like portraits or flower photograhy when you want the background to be blury or out of focus. This puts the concentration on the subject. The lower the f-stop the larger the lens opening.

It would be nice if f-stop was the only issue but it's not. When you decrease f-stops you let more light into the camera therefore overexposing your image. Compensation must be done by increasing shutter speed and/or decreasing ISO.
