What do you want to be in focus?

What you want to be infocus depens on what you are trying to emphasize.

Higher f-stops give greater Depth of Field. This simply means that you want everything to be in focus, near and far. This higher the f-stop the smaller the lens opening.

Lower f-stops limit DOF (Depth of Field) This is great for close ups like portraits or flower photograhy when you want the background to be blury or out of focus.

Many texts tell is that the higher the f/stop number the greater the DOF or overall focus. This may be true but it may not give the best results. With most camers the optium DOF is F/10 to F/14. With this setting you will get a good DOF and a pleasing picture.

Your creativity will decide how much or little of DOF you will need. Experiment with different scenarios and decide what is most pleasing to you and what your audience will prefer.
